Plan your Final Project

Each student is to plan a major project which will be executed this semester. You will create a web site with a minimum of eight pages. This will count as the final exam in the class. Along the way, there will be several opportunities for evaluation of your effort.

Please remember that this is a school project. As such, the instructor reserves the right to refuse any work deemed offensive in nature. Examples include, but are not limited to: work that denigrates or demeans others, is of a sexually explicit or implicit nature, features violence, or offers humor at the expense of others. This is not the forum for your views on controversial topics. Once again, this is a class assignment.

If you have any doubt about the acceptability of your project, ask me before proceeding. If your work is rejected on grounds of being inappropriate for a school setting, you will not be allowed to remake this project.

Include a minimum of five techniques from the following list:

two state buttons nav bar invisible trigger drag layer puzzle CSS page design
Dreamweaver
animation

browser selection,
alternate pages

jump menu rollover photos locked background image inclusion of your Flash file(s)
library items use of templates meta tag
transitions
text of layer, text of frame, text of status bar inclusion of sound file inclusion of movie file

For extra credit, include more techniques from the list. They are worth 2 possible points each.
This being Web2 class, you may have additional techniques you would like to employ. For example, the inclusion of Javascript, Weft font information, etc. Include this in your project plan.

Part of the grade will be based on your filing system.
Follow the prescribed naming convention (see elsewhere in the Grc web site for a handout).
All of your images should appear within an "images" folder, nested inside of your project folder. You will have to showcase this as a part of your demonstration in class.

Page Break

Spelling/Grammar will count as a part of your grade.
If you have difficulty with these issues, copy and paste your text into a word processor. Use the spell check and grammar check features. When finished, copy and paste your text back into your Dreamweaver page.

Optimization for the web will count as a part of your grade.
As a part of your class demonstration, you will have to show the file size for your images. You may be asked to display an image in Fireworks so we can see how it was created. In all cases, file size should be kept to a minimum.

Overall quality of effort and execution will count as a part of your grade. You are not to use the projects which have already been submitted/graded. I am expecting new material. Part of your grade will be based on your organized presentation.

Effectiveness of design will count as a part of your grade. Refer to, The Non-Designers Design Book by Robin Williams, for advice. I will look for the application of Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity in your design. Readability, legibility, line length, size of type, and judicious use of color will all play a role in the determination of this portion of your grade.

Please click this link for a copy of the grading sheet I will use to evaluate your project.

You will have approximately eight class sessions to complete this assignment. Additional lab time is available outside of class hours. See me for details about the schedule.

You must appear on the day of our scheduled final exam and demonstrate your project. This will be critiqued in class, and evaluated at that time only. Do not email me this project. There will be no make-up for this final project.

I will provide refreshments, and hope you enjoy the challenge! This should be a lot of fun.
